In the wake of the recent bombings in Bali, Indonesia, the Department of Tourism (DoT) issued a statement allaying fears of possible untoward incidents in the country’s tourism destinations.

According to Tourism Secretary Joseph ‘Ace’ H. Durano, "Tourists have nothing to worry about because the DoT is coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to strengthen security in these areas. Our Tourist Police and the Task Force Turista Patrol will monitor and will be more visible in tourist belt areas like Intramuros, Malate and Luneta Park in Manila."

As for the provinces, DoT launched the Security of Tourists Operational Program (STOP) to spread awareness and address tourist security-related issues. "Vigilance not only from security organs but as well as the local community and business owners should be emphasized," Durano said.

"Tourism needs a safe environment in which to thrive, so it is essential that tourist professionals develop a good working relationship with well-trained tourism security agents. And as tourism security becomes more professionalized, other tourism professionals have begun to see that security departments not only help to protect their investment but form the basis of good hospitality."

"The latest bombing would definitely have a disastrous effect on Bali’s tourism and other Southeast Asian countries," he said. The negative coverage caused by terrorism has cost the world’s tourism industries billions of dollars in lost revenues.

Following the bombings, anti-travel advisories are certain to be imposed on Bali and other Southeast countries again, including the Philippines.

"The tourism industry is facing yet another challenge. The newest bombings in Indonesia should be a reminder that terrorism continues to be a threat to tourism throughout the world."
