Camp John Hay: A destination for all seasons

Camp John Hay is famous as a summer hideaway. But the big secret is out: The premier mountain resort is also a prime destination during the rainy season. After all, "summer" is not the only S-word synonymous to this favorite destination.

Sparkling. Amazing what an hour or two of rain can do: All grime and dirt are washed away in one clean sweep. In Camp John Hay’s Scout Hill area, the walkways sparkle with a certain afterglow that makes them irresistible to people who want to take a stroll and smell the after-rain scent. The grass in the playground and mini-golf club areas is greener, while the whites of the Camp’s cottages shimmer with droplets of the past downpour.

Serene. Rain gives that warm feeling of calm and tranquility, especially in the company of a steaming cup of coffee and a fat novel. Even in heavy downpour, there’s quiet warmth emitted by every area in the Camp. A place at a cranny facing Camp John Hay Manor’s Friendship Garden is like front seat in a play with nature unraveling its splendor. A table at the Golf Clubhouse, on the other hand, gives a panoramic view of the Jack Nicklaus-designed Camp John Hay greens.

Surreal. When the rain lets up, a thick blanket of fog envelops the whole place. The sight is just breathtaking – it’s a virtual walk in the clouds. With 250,000 pine trees giving off their strongest scent in the humid weather, a whiff of air in the Camp is very refreshing and invigorating.

Sweet Servings. Breakfast or brunch is best taken at Camp John Hay. It has shops and restaurants that offer picture-perfect ambience. Have a cup of the best brew at Chocolate de Batirol, or at the local chains of Figaro and Starbucks; or sumptuous breakfast fare at the Manor’s Le Chef, The Filling Station at Ordonio Drive or the resto-packed Mile Hi Center.

Stimulating. The outdoors is an adventure during cloudburst, but an exhilarating experience can always be had inside other famous sites in John Hay. Because rain always calls for a good read, the Camp’s interim Library, currently located at the Camp John Hay Marketing, Sales and Public Relations department, is a perfect place to cuddle up with a book. Here, hard-to-find editions of book selections can be found. The library also features rare, collector’s edition LPs and a turntable for a musical nostalgia trip.

These are only some of the sensible reasons to visit Camp John Hay this season. The sights and sounds of the country’s foremost vacation destination are waiting for you and your family.
