When the dusk set off on Nov. 18, dignified men and women from the high strata of society started to fill in the spacious, elegant ballroom of the New World Renaissance Hotel, Makati City, which could accommodate up to 750 people.

By 8 p.m. the ballroom was jampacked as people turned up to taste nearly 500 best and superior wines from 16 countries known as the largest wineries in the world.

The evening affair reverberated the delights of the participants as the wines they tasted were matched by delectable cuisines prepared by no less than the hotel’s executive chef Cholin Owen Healy, including his team.

Noted guests and participants who came to savor the occasion were ambassadors of many nations, which include Mario Schuff of Argentina; Jorge Montero of Chile; Ryichiro Yamazaki of Japan; and Radu Homescu of Romania.

The affair was organized and sponsored by top companies and corporations led by Ralph’s Wines and Spirits and Philippine Wine Merchants owned by the Joseph brothers namely Robert, Ralph, Ronald and Raymond.

The lively and joyful night was also punctuated with the presence of showbiz celebrities like actresses Dina Bonnevie, Pops Fernandez, Vivian Velez, Pinky de Leon, Maricel Laxa, and husband Anthony Pangilinan, TV host and business entrepreneur, and singer RJ Jacinto.

The event was also graced by government and business leaders like Philippine Tourism Authority General Manager Dean Barbers, Tom Lantion, Undersecretary of the Department of Transportation and Communications, and Gulf Air Country Manager Roberto Hukom.

Barbers, the man to reckon with in tourism, assured Ralph’s Wines and Spirits to extend this kind of wine experience event to three nights and four days in year 2007 as a night’s affair is insufficient to satisfy the cravings of wine and cuisine lovers.

If Barbers were just as helpful to the Joseph brothers, Hukom, on the other hand, was Joseph brothers’ bosom buddy.

During the affair, Gulf Air through Hukom sponsored the major prizes like free tickets to Johannesburg and Paris to lucky winners among the guests.

There was not let up for the people tasting the award-winning wines such as Montes, Yalumba, Bodegas Chivite, Bolla, Wente Vineyards, MontGras, Bodegas Trapiche, Warburn Estate, KWV, Blue Nun, Jacob’s Creek, Wyndham Estate, Caliterra, Vina Albali, Wolf Blass, Columbia Crest, Hardys Penfolds, Prahova Valley, Santa Carolina and Lindemans. These wines came from the best vineyards in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Moldovia, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Spain and the United States.

According to Robert Joseph, the event was so successful that guests and participants would like to replicate it in key cities like Cebu and Davao.
