BORACAY ISLAND – A group of veteran leisure and travel journalists and enterprising businessmen from Aklan and Manila have laid the groundwork for promoting the Philippines’ tourist destinations, beginning with the world-famous Boracay island.

The major components of their promotional pitch to help the Philippines attract more tourists and lure investors is to project the country as a nation-paradise with scores of world-class and beautiful beach resorts in its more than 7,000 islands and bring interest to dozens more scenic spots in various eco-tourism provinces.

Spearheading the group is former Kalibo Mayor Juan P. Dayang and current president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines. "Initially, we have decided to set up a travel agency, the Boracay Island Paradise Travel and Tours," he said, adding that "this agency will operate like a normal travel agency but extend services over and beyond travel business, to promote the Philippines."

According to the former Manila Overseas Press Club (MOPC) president, he has recently undertaken media networking in various Asian and European countries. "I have been to South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and the US recently, talking with friends in media to promote the country’s tourism potential," he explained.

Aside from the travel agency, the group is also embarking on publishing a Philippine tourism journal. This journal, called Boracay Sun, will be distributed worldwide through the network of travel agencies, hotel and resort operators, airline and other transport companies, and all tourism-related enterprises. "But this cannot be accomplished without the support of the consulates and embassies of the Philippines in more than 120 countries," Dayang noted.

Set to be launched this May, Boracay Sun, will have for its theme in the maiden issue the history, the development, and the "future" of Boracay. It will also feature Mindoro island’s tourism potential as a sidebar.
