Two new islets born in Pangasinan

By TONY B. VILLAR, JR.

EVERY time the Hundred Islands in Barangay Lucap, Alaminos City is mentioned, one is often confronted with, “there is no 100 Islands there any more, only 99.”

There is an interesting story that boatmen making a living from ferrying tourists to Quezon Island, one of the more developed islands in the 123 Island Group, were surprised one morning after a strong typhoon to see two new white islands West of the island group to the direction of the Spratleys out at the South China Sea. There were no islands there the day before the typhoon.

The two white islands is growing Northern Coast off the island town of Anda. Out of curiosity, from the Hundred Islands Resort Hotel where I work, I paid the islands a visit lately.

On the shore, I found the islets made of corals. Surrounding the islets are thick seaweeds. The water off-shore is about three fathoms deep, going deeper as one moves away from the island. The incoming waves from the China Sea are huge and strong.

Peering close at the seaweeds, one can discern sea snakes and fishes through the grass.

After three years, there are now mangroves growing at the water edge of the islets. Fishermen have even built shades to protect themselves from the heat of the sun.

With illegal fishing banned from the Hundred Islands, the islets could be a big help to the hook-and-line fishermen who fish at night.

Even during high tide, the islets (about one hectare each) could be seen basking above the waves under the sun.
