Top 10 RP beach destinations

With 7,107 islands strung like pearls across the Pacific Ocean and South China Sea, the Philippines is home to literally thousands of palm fringed beaches and hundreds of idyllic resorts. We probably have more world-class beaches than any other country in the world.

I combed the coastline to pick out some of the best summer beach destinations. So, ready that skimpy swimsuit, work out those abs, and pick the island paradise of your choice.

1) Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte (in photo). Though it will take you almost a half a day to get there by land, the trip is definitely worth it. Pagudpud’s beach is a popular destination to wind and wave surfers.

2) Samal Island, Davao. The place offers more than just the beach, with its tranquil and exotic sceneries one cannot ask for a more relaxing and quiet retreat. It is blessed with various natural wonders of flora and fauna.

3) Palawan. Although Alex Garland’s backpacker odyssey "The Beach" is set in Thailand, he took much of the inspiration for the location from the islands of Palawan. Its natural scenery, divespots, and beautiful offshore islands such as Coron, Honda Bay and El Nido, are just a few of this island’s gems.

4) Mactan Island, Cebu. This island is home to one of the most lavish hotels in the country. With private beaches, it offers an exciting range of recreation activities with modern amenities and excellent services. Indeed, a modern tropical island.

5) Camiguin. People consider the place the "Garden of Eden" in the country. Camiguin has a great topography that also includes waterfalls, hot and cold springs.

6) Panglao Island, Bohol. If you love to dive, Panglao is the place to be. It is famous for its world-class diving locations and is home to numerous beach resorts.

7) Hundred Islands, Pangasinan. Of the 123 islands that make up the group, the three most famous -- Quezon Island, Governor’s Island, and Children’s Island, are definitely must-visit spots. Pick one among the three, or rent a boat and have yourselves dropped off and picked up at an island of your choice.

8) San Juan, Batangas. Other than being famous as a major producer of coffee, it is also known for its beaches and dive sites. Recently, the city of San Juan has been a popular destination of beach enthusiasts, with resorts such as Kabayan, Palm Beach and La Luz (a personal favorite).

9) Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. It has been the destination of choice among the young, wherein they consider the place as a nearby (and cheaper!) Boracay. White Beach has always been the most popular destination in Galera, together with Sabang, which is where the nightlife is.

10) Boracay Island, Aklan. Of course, any "top 10 beaches" list will not be complete without Boracay. Its claim to world fame is its talcum fine white sand. Need I say more?
