Biay Festival: A celebration of life
Source: Manila Bulletin

The Biay festival (pronounced byay), derived from the Aeta word which means life, celebrates the life-giving attributes of the natural environment in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone with various activities from April 20-22. The festival takes off from the global celebration of Earth Day.

In the olden days when forests, rivers and seas provided Subic’s indigenous Aeta tribe with food and the material basis for their culture, the natural world continues to sustain the growth of the Subic Bay Freeport providing a wealth of resources, enabling industry and commerce, and evoking aesthetic satisfaction as well.

Because of the nurturing qualities of Subic’s natural environment, as well as its contribution to economic growth, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority has prioritized environmental protection in its agenda and now takes pride in its successful efforts at preserving the natural environment in the Freeport.

With theme ‘’Celebrate Life,’’ the festival serves as an expression of this reverence for life, giving visitors a close-up look at nature and a hands-on experience in how man should live in harmony with his environment.

Activities include a bancathon race, technology and products fair, "Colors of Subic’’ photo and video contest exhibits, Acoustic Music Contest, Ayta Cultural Night, Search for Best Summer-themed Establishments, Ultimate Beach Hunk Contest, Diwata ng Subic Earth Fashion Contest, reggae concert by the beach, Indak Kalikasan streetdance competition, and body painting contest.

An exciting activity is the back–to–basics eco adventure camp at the Apaliin Trail Camp aiming to educate families, barkadas and outdoor enthusiasts on jungle survival skills from Ayta trainors while living in a jungle setting.
