In Popo’s garden

This lush Tagaytay eden called Taman Auang is fast becoming a favorite haunt of artists and nature lovers...

Tagaytay lovers who are looking for a new, more intimate alternative to Sonia’s or Antonio’s will gush over this new find — Taman Auang.

As well as being a productive painter with regular exhibitions in Manila and occasionally overseas, Popo has another outlet for his creative talents. He has been slowly developing this garden he calls Taman Auang (Taman is Indonesian/Malay for garden, while Auang is the name of Popo’s grandmother) for the past 12 years.

Situated just off the main highway only about 500 meters after Mendez Crossing (second road on the right after the crossing), Taman Auang is easily accessible and provides a perfect sojourn for some peaceful hours. It is also a great place to take a break on the drive back from Batangas.

An impressive array of local and imported plants are found amongst almost fairyland surrounds - garnished with various wood carvings, statues and ancient milling stones etc. Many exotic varieties of orchids, palms, tree ferns, bamboos, bromeliads, halyconia and fruit trees abound. And yet, Popo says it will always be yet another work in progress!

Popo’s garden and studio appropriately looks out on to this haven from both sides. He is rather prolific, and constantly at work on his current directions of work as well as private commissions. This makes Taman Auang always entertaining and colorful.

By arrangement, lunches and even parties can be catered for - either in the house or under canopies in the garden. Popo’s mother Marina whips up magic in her kitchen at her weekend retreat on the other side of Taman Auang.
