TOP 10 Etiquette in resort spas

Everyone loves to get pampered. It’s a self-loving ritual that makes us feel cleansed and healthy. Most of the time, I do my spa trips on my own, usually every after two weeks.

Going on a spa treatment should be a relaxing, not a stressful, experience. So for those people who have never had a massage before, here are a few spa etiquette tips.

1) DO I HAVE TO TAKE MY CLOTHES OFF? This is probably the primary concern of many. There’s always that fear of exposing oneself. Although a massage is usually done nude, keeping your underwear on is a choice. Whatever you choose, it will be fine with your professional spa therapist. No need to explain. But if you decide to go nude, you will definitely be covered with a sheet at all times so there’s no need to worry. Only the part being massaged is exposed.

2) BE ON TIME. Arrive at least 10 minutes early before your appointment. This will allow you a stress-free check in. Many spas require a first-timer to fill out an intake form before your scheduled treatment. This will also give you ample time to change and freshen up.

3) TURN OFF YOUR CELLPHONE. Spas create a soothing, relaxing and mellow environment, which can be ruined with the piercing sound of any mobile hand-held device. Show that you have manners and turn them off.

4) STAY QUIET. Keep voices down when entering the spa. If you are with friends, save the chit-chat outside, after you’re done.

5) ON MAKING AN APPOINTMENT, schedule spa stays at least two weeks in advance to ensure you have a room, or a therapist is available for you.

6) CHOOSE A TREATMENT. Be sure to check with the spa for their services. There are a variety of treatments to choose from so just pick the one you think you’ll be most comfortable with. If you schedule two treatments together, get a massage before your facial. A body treatment should go first before your massage.

7) SHOWER BEFORE A MASSAGE. A hot shower can relax you before your spa treatment. Get there even sooner if the spa has a steam room, sauna or hot tub.

8) BE OPEN WITH YOUR THERAPIST. Inform your therapist of any body or skin allergies, etc. as medications may affect your skin. They will then customize your massage or facial treatment. If you’re uncomfortable with anything during your treatment such as the pressure, the music, the temperature -- speak up.

9) AFTER THE MASSAGE or any other treatment, if the therapist says, "Take your time getting up," that usually means a few minutes. It’s not an invitation to take a nap. Also, don’t work out after a spa treatment. You’ve just paid all that money to relax your muscles. Why would you want to tense them up again? Likewise, a cold shower after a massage is a no-no.

10) TIPPING. Tip your spa therapist. Show your appreciation to them and give at least 15 percent. Your therapist will remember and will take extra special care of you on your next visit.
