DoT sustains momentum on Intramuros revival

With the success of A Walk Back In Time: Theatre in the Round series, the Department of Tourism (DoT) is now finalizing the concept and timeline of events and activities that will run beginning fourth quarter of the year.

The concept embraces the various facets of Intramuros — from history to culture, as well as trade crafts during the glory days and the height of the Walled City’s hustle and bustle. When finalized, this will be marketed and promoted among stakeholders of the tourism industry.

The concept envisions Intramuros as one stop destination for visitors who wish to experience what life was like during the Spanish times. Quality Filipino products will be showcased and available for sale so visitors can purchase these as gifts or mementos.

In a statement, Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said that "Intramuros is an ideal and natural setting to highlight the country’s history and culture during the colonial period. We want to create a substantial and more comprehensive offering for local and foreign tourists, giving them an experience beyond the usual. At the same time, we will preserve Intramuros’ historical integrity, restoring identified areas while enhancing the overall appreciation of guests who visit Intramuros any time and day of the week."

The project will bring forward an experiential treat from walking tours, day trips, pocket and staged cultural performances at certain times of the day, culinary shops, craft and antique boutiques, among others.

"Anything we do, whether planning, development and promotion will always consider the preservation and protection of Intramuros as a national landmark and the country’s pride," Durano added.
