Lufthansa introduces electronic maps

Around 15,600 navigation maps are required each year by a pilot. This could soon become a part of history with the introduction of the new almost paperless cockpit.
A paperless cockpit

Developed by Lufthansa Systems, the IT specialist in the Lufthansa Group, the countless sheets of paper will be replaced by electronic maps on a special pilot’s screen in the cockpit.

The electronic solution will be standard for the new Airbus A380, the future flagship of the Lufthansa fleet. That will not only save paper, but also tons of kerosene.

Currently, for the 850 Lufthansa destinations, there are still around 11,000 colored and true–to–scale maps, which are printed on special paper in order to save weight. These maps contain all the aeronautical information which may possibly be required during a flight, such as topographical information, radio frequencies, minimum flying heights, etc. And to ensure that the maps have all the latest information, they must be regularly updated, reprinted and circulated. Numerous airlines have already indicated their interest in acquiring the electronic navigation maps.

Since early this year, an Airbus A340-600 as prototype has been on trial with the new electronic map for Lufthansa.

AirAsia to operate flights from Bangladesh

DHAKA (AFP) – Budget airline AirAsia will begin operating from Bangladesh this month after the authorities adopted a three–month ‘’open sky’’ policy allowing foreign airlines more flights, an official said.

From now to Dec. 31, Bangladesh hopes to clear a backlog of 150,000 people who have jobs waiting abroad but no flights to get them there.

‘’AirAsia has availed the opportunity and we have allowed them to fly five flights a week from the port city of Chittagong to Kuala Lumpur,’’ Bangladesh civil aviation authority chief Shakeb Iqbal Khan Majlish said.

‘’They said they would operate Airbus A330 aircraft with a capacity of 312 passengers. They would start flights from the middle of October,’’ he said.

AirAsia will be the second budget airline to operate from Chittagong, the country’s second biggest city with a population of around five million.

AirAsia operates from a dedicated low-cost terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and boasts southeast Asia’s biggest low-cost fleet. It also operates in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and China.
