In Pursuit of Leisure

A passing observation of the history of boats reveals much about the nature of humans.

Designed to traverse one of the first few things that proved impassable to primitive man, boats have been integral to the development of communities, with the very earliest of humans paddling across rivers on crudely fashioned logs to spread what passed for civilization at the time.

Though mankind has since defeated the myriad ordeals of traveling through water, air, and, indeed, even through space, I found myself thinking of two very crucial matters as I boarded a speedboat and watched as the boats involved in Club Punta Fuego’s Regatta competition sail by.

Firstly, boats are capable of incredible speeds without the use of engines and, secondly (though perhaps more important of the two), conquering the seas would be far easier had I taken a tablet of Bonamine an hour before it all started.

Fighting down motion sickness, I kept watch on the brightly colored sails and attempted, not without difficulty, to determine what was going on.

Times being what they are, seafaring craft such as these are rather unlikely to carry people who harbor any intention of creating new settlements. Its passengers are more likely to be the kind who much prefer a leisurely afternoon over blazing a trail for humanity to follow.

However, given that Landco Pacific Corporation, famed developer of luxury communities, was organizer of the event, that assumption might well be proven false. Heading back to the motionless safety of dry land, we settle down for a quieter sort of afternoon.

Seaside siesta

"The thrust of Landco is its tagline Life at Your Leisure," says Alex Xerez-Burgos III, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of the company’s sales and marketing division, "It’s about how you want to spend your leisure moments."

True enough, it never does seem more apparent than when you’re seated in an open-air Italian restaurant, enjoying a fine meal right across the soft waves.

Not surprisingly, Club Punta Fuego delivers on the tagline’s inherent promise. Visitors who wish to enjoy an uncomplicated weekend out of the city will certainly find no small amount of gratification with the many activities (or inactivity, as it were) that they can engage in while in Punta Fuego.

While some might find leisure in exploring the coastline or boarding a vessel bound for the deeper parts of the sea, others may yet enjoy a small measure of inner peace just staring at the view or at the more solemn wonders of cable television and air-conditioning.

Host to a wide selection of facilities such as a spa, gym, squash court, golf course, mini theatre, marina, restaurants and numerous pools and coves, Club Punta Fuego is perhaps the most extensively developed community of its kind in the area.

The Casitas, 33 luxurious rooms designed to open out to a view of the peninsula, are available for individuals who would like to take a small respite from the stressful working life. For those with an eye towards a more permanent stay, though, their posh village is well worth looking into.

Noons and nocturnes

Nearing the night’s end, we shuffle off to the Upper Beach, thrilled at the prospect of having the final meal of the day. Despite having fallen asleep in the middle of the afternoon and missing what would have been a remarkable sunset by the beach had I the inclination to stay awake, I find no trifling consolation in watching the lunar light on the water’s surface instead.

I take my camera out and, deciding that my talents as an imagist are questionable at best, resign myself to enjoying the rest of the evening, leaving all thought of the city’s burdens forgotten.

To compensate for my earlier lapse, I make a mental note to at least attempt to watch the sun rise. The next day, so it goes, I would wake up at noon and find myself mental-note-challenged. A wistful sigh and a zipping of bags later, and I am off to suffer the city again.
