It was a weekend reserved for everything that flew – paragliders, the multi-colored and differently shaped hot-air balloons, skydivers, butterflies, birds, and bees, even dust – at the annual Philippine International Hot-Air Balloon Fiesta held at Clarkfield, Pampanga.
But what caught the attention of photo enthusiasts, aside from the colorful spectacle in the sky, was the "garbage brigade" in hot pursuit of their targets – trash left by participants of the fiesta. Armed with broomsticks, dustpans, and trash bags, the Caltex Cleaners, hired from surrounding towns of Pampanga and even from faraway Bamban, Tarlac, went on a trash-eradication mission.
At the end of the day, the 100 cleaners filled up 10 trucks with trash! The collected garbage was then separated – the plastics, cans, and bottles, all the recyclables from those that were not – and sold for profit.
