Ilaw ng tahanan in Tawi-tawi

Housewives in Tawi-Tawi are arming themselves to wage not a rebellion but a no nonsense clean-up drive in the province. The Bais and their families have all pitched in to keep the whole 11 municipalities of Tawi-Tawi spic and span.

“Ilaw ng Tahanan,” is a program that aims not only to equip its members with the necessary tools for clean-up but to make them aware of the importance of taking care of the environment.

“I would like to concentrate on the cleanliness because it’s useless to promote the place when the sanitation is not good,” said Tourism Council Head Juana Sahali, wife of Tawi-Tawi Governor Sadikul Sahali who is spearheading the project.

It also includes a visit to other provinces in the country whose respective environmental brigades have been successful in their clean-up campaign and consequently learn from them. Although “Ilaw ng Tahanan” started in Bato-Bato Island 13 years ago, putting up such an organization in each municipality was a big challenge. According to Sahali, what made it difficult was the integration of the people who were not even aware of the problem from the start.

“There are many visitors who come to Tawi-Tawi and we hope that when this sanitation project is completed, many more people would be able to just relax here and enjoy the place,” said Vice-Gov. Ruby Sahali-Tan.
