The Manor at Camp John Hay in Baguio gets a touch of nostalgic creativity

MANILA, Philippines - Rich and elegant, violet’s many shades encapsulate opulence and sophistication. The color of royalty, its deep tones go perfectly with winter landscapes and crisp, chilly mornings. Paired off with luminous, tropical colors, however, violet takes on a totally unexpected effect. Merging offbeat warmth with stylish coolness, this hue is perfect for couples looking to celebrate an out-of-the-box wedding that is as elegant and tasteful as any royal affair.

The juxtaposition between the traditional and the quirky is the key element in creating a lavender-hued theme. “Baguio is so scenic—you look around you and everything is picture perfect,” explains event stylist Badang Rueda. Destination weddings, he adds, shouldn’t take away from the natural surroundings, but at the same time, should not be allowed to simply fade into the background.“

Colors like plum and yellow allow your set-up to pop,” he says. “It’s not about matching everything in your environment, but about making a good mix.” Set against the earth-toned Manor Hotel, the various shades of violet teamed with warm tones of orange and yellow create a striking visual contradiction that is surprisingly fresh and totally new. Even the menu and name cards, designed by The Write Impression, are contrasting, with silver and copper highlights that make them float over a sea of violet.“

Just because the Manor takes on a country feel, doesn’t mean that everything else should be the same,” he says. “You have to make your wedding visible against that background.” Allusions to the Manor’s log cabin ambiance are scattered throughout the set-up, with chocolate-brown painted twigs and bamboo, but these quiet touches are simply meant to add dimension to the vignette, and not overpower the plum and yellow theme.

Moving away from the expected to produce a never-seen-before destination wedding was Badang’s key focus—something he applied to every detail, down to the blooms. “When you think of Baguio, you think of flowers right away,” he says. “I wanted to veer away from floral and instead go for other Baguio products—vegetables like broccoli and cactus roses.” Mixed in with sparse flowers like nut dragons, alstroemeria, carnations, calla lilies and phalaenopsis, the effect is unusual and absolutely arresting.

“The great thing about weddings in Baguio is the fact that so much greenery is available to you,” says Badang, who opted to feature a veranda wedding to showcase not just the garden views, but also the hotel itself. “You can just visit a nearby greenhouse, pick something out of the store and right away, plop it onto your presidential table!” Exploring unpredictable combinations like plum and yellow, country and class, makes for an unforgettable wedding that every guest will surely remember. Royalty, with a twist— it’s the ideal combination for those looking to add some pop to their destination wedding.
