Tourism Secretary Gemma Cruz-Araneta has made available to civil

servants several government-owned leisure and vacation destinations

at affordable rates as part of the Department of Tourism's program to

boost domestic tourism.

The Secretary disclosed the department's new initiative during a recent

afternoon gathering called "Jammin' with Gemma" with officials and employes

of the Civil Service Commission.

The gathering was held to launch the CSC's celebration of Women's Month

and to honor the Secretary as being one of two women secretaries with

portfolios in President Estrada's Cabinet.

"Special packages can be set up for civil servants at affordable rates to enable

them to participate in domestic tourism and see the Philippines," she

stressed.

Among the Philippine Tourism Authority properties which could be made

available to civil servants are the Lingayen Gulf Resort Hotel and San Fabian

Beach Resort, both in Pangasinan; Pagsanjan Garden Resort in Laguna;

MacArthur Park Beach Resort in Leyte; Balicasag Island Dive Resort near

Bohol Island; Ardent Hot Spring Resort on Camiguin Island; Mt. Data Hotel in

Mt. Province, and the Banaue Hotel and Youth Hostel in Ifugao.

A memorandum of agreement between the DOT and the CSC on the special

package for civil servants will be ready for signing at the end of the month in

line with Women's Month.

For her part, Alma de Leon said the project "is in line with the thrust of the

CSC to humanize the bureaucracy and take advantage of leisure activities."

She said the Civil Service would encourage government employes to take their

15-day leave to enable them to avail of the program.

With the approval of their respective agencies and depending on the availability

of funds, they will also be allowed to convert into cash the unused portion of

their vacation leave to raise money for use in their vacation.

"Centennial leave may be utilized to go to Centennial sites and nearby

facilities of the DOT," De Leon added.
