QUESTION NO. 1:

If there is one thing to do you would recommend to a tourist in the

Philippines, what would it be? And why?

To post your answer, send e-mail to travelsmart@infophil.com .

"When in the Philippines, do what the Filipinos do" -Mimi Gregorio

To start off the sunny mornings, take a cold "tabo-timba" (pitcher-and-pail) method of bathing.Dress up in summer

clothes, i.e. shorts, cool tees and sandals, and don't forget that umbrella! In the

Philippines, umbrellas are portable sun-blocks.

Experience the streets by taking all the available forms of Pinoy transportation:pedicab/ sidecar, tricycle, jeepney, bus,

calesa, ferry, banca (between Bacood and New Panaderos is one peso one way), LRT, bus, taxi and just walk when it's

really traffic.

Eat where the mood strikes you to eat.Filipinos eat breakfast, merienda, lunch, merienda and dinner. The best way to

taste Filipino is to eat Filipino foods:tapsilog, chicharon, lumpia, dinuguan, karekare and all the stuff that makes your

mouth water.

Why do what the Filipinos do when you're in the Philippines?Simply becausenow you can say, "I was a Filipino for

my vacation" instead of "I visited the Philippines."

Sagada, "Close to the heavens" -Bill & Lorna

Anybody dream of a simple life where you could pursue the ART of your choice and escape the daily "have to make a

living" grind?? If you know an alternative please share it with me;I'd love to hear your stories or comments-"show me

yours and I'll show you mine" just like show and tell in school. The Philippine version of Shangri-la, Sagada may not be

Utopian but it is definitely remote and exotic. Located 275-km north of Manila (100-km from Baguio) near the

provincial capital of Bontoc it's a long day's bus ridestarting from the Dangwa bus station in Baguio over the narrow

mountain tracks traversing the Cordilleras. Even though popular among the "world traveler" backpackers, few people are

willing to brave the almost 30 total hours on buses required for the Baguio,Sagada,Bontoc,Banaue Manila circle through

incredible scenery. Sagada features caves that can be explored (even by non-experts) with the aid of local guides, an

interesting hike along an underground river, a waterfall and pool to cool off in after a day of exploring, and a quiet

serenity only found off the beaten path. The forebears of the current residents practiced an unusual burial practice by

hanging and stacking coffins, hewed from tree trunks, in the limestone karst cliffs and caves near town. Stay is the St.

Joseph's Guest House run by the nuns of an Episcopalian convent or at Masfere's Guesthouse ran by the family of the

famous photographer of the 1920's UNtouched tribal people. Both provide comfortable rooms, some meals, and help

locate guides. From Sagada it is a short ride to Bontoc where you can catch a jeepney to Banaue and its famous rice

terraces. My friend Dave,an Englishman I'd met years ago in Seoul, has made Sagada his "home" for the last 7 years(the

1st 4 devoted to painting and the last 3 to musical instruments-now hosting a music club with the locals ranging from

12yrs old to 55yrs old!) Pick up a few photos.post cards or T- shirts of the mountain tribes taken by E. Masfere and

colorful hand loomweavings.SOUVENIRS that Last a Lifetime.(and help the locals survive).

Forget the bus, ride the jeepney! -LL Blancas

Ride the Jeepney...There is no other place in the world that can boast of a unique and colorful way of public transport

other than in the Philippines. The beautiful array of jeepneys, especially designed, makes it more lovelier to see on the

streets amidst the traffic and all.As per experience, tourists coming from different continents of the world, are always

very anxious to ride on our jeeps. They say it would be an awesome experience for them to be riding the jeep for the

reasons that, first, it's unique and can only be seen in the Philippines; second, its colorful designs inside and out makes it a

moving attraction; third, you could fel natural fresh air (or whatever is left of it) whenever you ride one; and lastly, its a

cheaper mode of transport. And in line with Philippines 2000, air-conditioned jeepneys are now being manufactured

(and some are being used already in some parts) and will definitely be another talk of the town, not only for tourists, but

for Pinoys as well. These are especially designed for all those who hate the heat and pollution. So, for all the tourists,

do not go home to your native land without riding any routes of our local jeepneys or you'll surely miss something that is

proudly Philippine made.

Silay, Negros Occidental -Michiko Makinano

One thing that i can recommend to a tourist visiting the country is to visit the provinces and experience a free and relaxed

country life. One of the places he/she can visit is Silay, Negros Occidental. This is a great place for sight seeing, and

understanding the early life of the people here mainly influenced by the Spaniards.Houses and buildings are still colonial

and the people are simply warm and friendly.

Food is another great thing I can recommend to them.Filipino dishes are unique and very delicious. It must be seen and

tasted and I am sure they will look forward to have another round of those food served.

Every province has its own delicacy, from Luzon, Visayas down to Mindanao, tourists will be served with different great

dishes they never thought existed.

Not just eating the food will entice them to cherish the visit, but the cooking preparation, will entertain them.Filipinos

have a simple but unique way of preparing food in native cooking utensils.

Well, you can never appreciate all these I am mentioning 'til you get a taste of it yourself. The dishes are too many to

mention here and they make me hungry that I dare not write them.

If you haven't visited the provinces of the Philippines yet, better make them your next destination.See Ya!

Eat mangoes, lanzones, santol, and buko - Yvonne Peralta

Eat mangos, lanzones, santol, buko, and all kinds of bananas they can find. Why? .. because it's delicious! And I

recommend that they buy it from the market because it's more exciting going there than going to a grocery or ordering it

from a restaurant.. and also, it's less expensive.

Underground River - Poch Lauron

Now considered the ninth wonder of the world, the UNDERGROUND RIVER, is located in the cleanest and greenest

city in the Philippines. One cannot leave Palawan without seeing one of the wonders of God'screation. You can also

enjoy the white sand beaches of Puerto Princesa and the hospitality of the Palawenos.

As all the tourists who'veseen the Underground River in Palawan, they say ITS THE VERY BEST Underground River

they've seen anywhere in the world.SO you Filipinos ought to be proud of it.And if you haven't seen it PLAN YOUR

TRIP THE SOONEST.Not only are the stactites great, you will also be entertained by the boatmen leading you in by

their

interpretations of the different formations of rocks inside the cave.

Davao -Fe KWAN

I'd recommend Davao to be toured not only by a foreigner but also by a Filipino resident. Davao is endowed with sweet

fruits and nice scenic spots. It also houses the endangered Philippine eagles. It would be advantageous to us all if the

public gets to appreciate in taking care of our nature.

Tinago Falls in Iligan City - Carlo Gonzo

I'd recommend tourists in the Philippines to visit the Tinago Falls in Iligan City in Mindanao. It's a magnificent waterfall

hidden from view. It might require some downward hiking but it's really worth the wait.

Bring a camera.
