Kuwait, one of the most modern countries in the world, is fast making a
name for itself as a tourist destination in the Middle East.
The small desert state has a wealth of natural and man-made attractions, as
well as a first-class transportation system.
The best example is the national flag carrier, Kuwait Airways. The airline,
which flies five times a week to Manila boasts of an ultra-modern fleet of 20
aircraft.
Kuwait Airways flies to 36 destinations in the Middle East, America, Europe,
Africa and Asia as it continues its impressive rebuilding effort after the
destructive Iraqi invasion in 1990.
Kuwait's top tourist attractions include:
Kuwait Towers - The most recognizable landmark and symbol of Kuwait, these
three towers rise to a height of 120 meters along the coastal highway. Visitors
can take an elevator to the main sphere, where a revolving viewing deck gives
a breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding gulf. There is also a
coffeeshop and souvenir shops.
Entertainment City - Located in the Doha area, about 20 kilometers north of
Kuwait City. This amusement park covers an area of one million square
meters and was opened in 1984. It is considered Kuwait's version of
Disneyland, but with Arab and international characteristics. It is a favorite
recreational spot for Kuwaitis and expatriates.
Waterfront Area Project - This ambitious project aims to redesign Kuwait
City's famous waterfront district. The first phase, covering a total area of six
kilometers was inaugurated in 1988. It includes Green Island, the
Amphitheater, Kuwait Towers, Kids Castle and the Spiral Way.
Green Island - With an area of 200,000 square meters, this park features a
lake where water from the Arabian Gulf flows through. Visitors can play water
games and other activities there. Beside it is the amphitheater modeled on
ancient Roman theaters. It can accommodate 700 persons for such functions
as concerts and official celebrations.
Failaka Tourist Resort - Inaugurated in 1982, this island resort contains
antiquities and historical ruins dating back to the Roman period. Failaka Island
is an important cultural and historical center for Kuwaitis.
Grand Mosque - This masterpiece of exquisite Islamic architecture was
opened in 1986. It has a total area of 45,000 square meters of which 5,300
square meters comprises the main hall. The Grand Mosque is an example of
traditional Islamic design, using modern construction technology, yet retains
the local characteristics of the environment in Kuwait and the gulf region. It
also preserves the Islamic tradition of ancient calligraphy.
