DAVAO CITY - This city has staked its claim to be the business and tourism
capital not only of Mindanao, but also of the East Asean Growth Area. Now it
adds another feather to its cap: as seat of fashion in the deep south.
Last Oct. 25, the Davao Tourism Association celebrated their 25th anniversary at the
grand ballroom of the Apo View Hotel. The event was highlighted with a fashion show
showcasing the creations of Alfonsos Boy Guinoo.
Guino-o interpreted key Filipino fashion motifs in his own unique, quaint styles.
For example, Guino-os take on the Maria Clara had a gossamer purplish skirt layered
by reed-thin straws. As the model sashayed on the ramp, the skirt swayed like a
grass skirt.
His interpretation of the Muslim dress was more traditional, using thick bright colors,
characteristic of Muslim fashions, with generous beadwork and embroidery.
His barot saya was made of rich damask colors of black, gold and purple, in gossamer
layer.
Guino-o tribal ensembles were sophisticated. A Tiboli-inspired gown had the richness
and intricacy of tribal colors and weaving, with slits on the skirt. Ladies wore a mask
to match the outfit.
Guino-os models were tourism icons Mary Ann Montemayor, Margie Moran Floirendo,
Catalina Dakudao, Jojie Ilagan Bian, George Walter Misa, Renato Gatchalian, Genette
Lon, Charles So of Marco Polo Davao.
Guests from Manila were Tourism Usec. Ram Antonio, Dawn Zulueta with hubby Anton
Lagdameo.
