A Jubilee mission centerfor Malate Church
Source: Inquirer
Author: Josephine Darang
Date: 1999-11-07

EVERYTHING is possible through God's grace so the people of

Malate and devotees of Our Lady of Remedies believe that the

planned Remedios Jubilee Mission Center will be built and

completed in due time.

The convento and mission center will be four stories high. The

ground floor will house the parish offices, while the second

floor will be the site of the mission exhibition and education

center. The third floor will provide facilities for meetings,

formation functions and assemblies. The fourth floor will house

the residence of the priests.

P.Y. Lim and Partners designed the structure. It is an exciting

time at Malate Church as all the religious organizations are

helping to sell P100 raffle tickets to raise funds. Nov. 20 (9 a.m.)

is the raffle date. A car and other prizes are at stake.

Why a new structure

The old convento was built in 1912 and reconstructed after the

war in 1948 at a cost of P66, 300. Instead of reconstruction and

repair, it was decided that it would be better to build a totally

new structure. I totally agree, but I cannot help but feel

nostalgic for the old convento. But as Fr. Michael Martin says:

''Let's help the Malate community enter the 21st century.''

Malate fiesta falls on Nov. 21

The fiesta in Malate honoring Our Lady of Remedies falls on the

third Sunday of November, which is Nov. 21. Through the

centuries, Our Lady of Remedies has always been known to

help pregnant women have safe deliveries and assure them of

healthy babies.

No wonder I used to always see pregnant women attending the

7 a.m. Mass. Then, I see the same women back in church after

their deliveries, thanking the Virgin.

As a way of thanksgiving, it would be nice to buy raffle tickets

now to help build the new convento. On Sundays there are

tables outside the church with people selling tickets. On

weekdays, you can always approach the commentator after the

Mass for tickets.

Well-known fashion designer Jing Chua is dressing up the

Virgin for the fiesta.

Our Lady of Buen Suceso, patroness of pilots

RORY Eizmendi, who just got back from Madrid to see her

daughter get married, told me she was able to visit the church of

Nuestra Seqora de Buen Suceso on Princesa St.

Her friend Maribel Guevara-Diaz Peqa who lives there with her

husband told her that pilots go to the Virgin before a flight and

pray to her for safe travel.

Our Lady of Buen Suceso is known there as the patroness of

pilots. In Manila, she is known as the patroness of the sick and

the bearer of good events. The feast of the Virgin under this title

is Nov. 29.

St. Gemma Galgani, intercessor for conversions

STILL in Madrid, people invoke St. Gemma Galgani for the

conversion of sinners and for other reasons. According to

Manolo Nieto who lives there, the saint, although originally

from Lucca, Italy is popular among the Spaniards.

I tried to see her when I was in Madrid with a group of travel

agents in November 1997. Elisa Manguiat of Marco Polo Travel

and I took a taxi from the piazza to go to her church but found it

closed. The man who answered the back door would not let us

in as it was not yet 3 p.m.

St. Gemma was born in 1878. She had a difficult childhood

because she and her siblings were orphaned at an early age.

Two aunts raised them.

When she was a teenager, Gemma suffered the wounds of

Christ on her hands, feet and on her side. This happened on

Thursdays and Fridays. A friend took her to live with her family.

She also encouraged Gemma to take down the messages of

Jesus and Mary during her ecstasies.

I pray to St. Gemma and she always helps me. But I don't have

yet an estampita of her.
