BARCELONA (DPA) - Since the start of the year Barcelona has had one more
attraction to entice tourists: visitors are now able to view this beautiful city in
northeastern Spain from a hot-air balloon.
The helium balloon, called Barcelona Globus Turistic, ascends to a height of 120
meters, treating the observer to a magnificent view of the Olympic stadium on the
slopes of Montjuich, the unfinished Sagrada Familia church and the Olympic village.
According to the operators, the captive balloon, at 36 meters tall and 80 meters in
circumference, is the largest of its sort in the world. There is place for 35 people in
the gondola. Lift-off and landing take just five minutes.
A trip in the balloon costs 2,000 pesetas (a little more than 12 dollars) per person.
The balloon is kept anchored on Passeig de la Circumvallacio, between the beautiful
old Estacio de Franca railway station and the zoo. It can even take off at night and in
heavy wind.
