One surmises that the name is inspired by the biblical account of how Christ
called his first apostles and gave them a mission. The gospels say it was on the
shore of Lake Galilee that Christ approached Simon (later called Peter) and his
brother Andrew, both fishermen. "Come with me," Christ said, "and I will make
you fishers of men." Not far away, he called two other fishermen, John and
James, sons of Zebedee.
The Twelve Apostles is the highlight of the daylong Great Ocean Road tour of
Australian Pacific Tours. One starts off in Melbourne at 8:30 a.m., and doesn't
get there till mid-afternoon. But it is well worth the wait-even if, as was our
experience, icy rain showers will permit only a brief encounter. Even through
the mist from the heavenly spray and the tears welling in one's eyes, the rock
formations cast a magic spell on the beholder.
Like the Lord's followers casting their nets into the sea in fulfillment of their
mission, the rock formations stand along Victoria's coastline as monuments to
God's grandeur in this showcase of land and sea.
