Making a SPLASH in Biñan, Laguna

The heat of past days has not failed to bring out the water-lover in most Pinoys - whether it is wading, dipping, or floating in it. After all, what is a summer holiday without going to a beach resort or public swimming pool to cool off?

However, some people might have had so much work to do that they failed to notice the summer days finally coming to a close. So, to make up for the guilt of not being able to take their families or friends for a vacation, they head out to the nearest and most accessible water park they can find. Fortunately, there is one just 30 kilometers south of Manila.

Splash Island, located at the Southwoods Ecocentrum in Biñan, Laguna, is known as the largest water park in the country. Getting there is easy as it is only some nine kilometers after the Filinvest Toll Plaza along the South Super Highway.

The water park sits on a vast piece of real estate where more than 12 water attractions can be found. The park is so vast that it can accommodate 6,000 guests at any given time.

Patterned after the famous water theme parks in the United States, Splash Island has a myriad of slides, pools and other water attractions for guests of all ages. Add to these the assurance of security. The management has set-up height and capability restrictions for some of the attractions.

For guests who are tall enough, Splash has six water slides with varying degrees of excitement. The Dos Sopremos and King Pilipit are exhilarating body slides with plenty of turns and giant twisters. The Big Bam Boo, Twisted Palms and Tausug Trails, on the other hand, offer riders on inner tubes with thrilling back-to-back 360-degree turns, full circle curves and down-the-tube dives.

The more adventurous adults could try out Magellan’s Drop, a long, four-level slide where riders race their way to pool level.

Not to be outdone, the little ones also have a special place in Splash Island. At least six attractions around the park are specially designed for kids. The Curl of the Orient, Camp Carambola and the Twin Coco Knots are actually baby versions of the big slides. In Bannakita, children can have a river adventure while the Boon Docks gives them a fun-filled wilderness trek.

The Water Wahoo attraction, meanwhile, is an interactive kiddie pool with innovative water play activities.

If family or friends would just like to float around together, the Balsa River offers a relaxing river ride around the park. Guests can ride an inner tube and drift along the flowing waterway which flows at a pace of three miles per hour.

Another group ride attraction is the Rio Montanosa which takes guests on a mountain high river raft ride through giant tubes with twists and turns.

One of Splash Island’s best attractions is the Agos Grandes, a giant pool, where waves are generated by powerful turbines. The pool allows you to ride with the tide.

After all those exciting slipping, sliding and splashing, guests can recharge at the Fiesta sa Pulo were a sumptuous feast is served. Bringing food into the park is not allowed but there are numerous food establishments that serve food at reasonable prices.

The park is staffed by close to a hundred pool technicians, life guards, guest-relations officers and security personnel to assure utmost convenience for all guests.

At every slide, at least two marshals are on-hand to guide the riders on how to ride correctly. In most rides, marshals will not allow guests to proceed with the ride until they are assured that the rider who went ahead has safely completed the slide down. This prevents riders from bumping into each other which can result to injuries.

The cleanliness of the water in all the attractions is also maintained by a centralized filtration system located at center of the park. A team of pool technicians perform an hourly check on the water to make sure that it is healthy for treading.

A US-based water-park expert visits Splash Island periodically to check and upgrade the facilities and keep it at par with other theme parks around the world.

Admission during weekdays is P250 for adults and P200 for children. During weekends, adults are charged P325 while children are admitted for P250. Senior citizens are charged the children’s rate as long as they can present their National Senior Citizen IDs. Kids under 36 inches can enter the park free of charge.

The park is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. all week long.
