The fabulous Manila Hotel was the venue recently of a haute couture extravaganza featuring fashion designers based in Quezon City. The show “Año... Anyo ... 2002,” presented by Bridalane Co., was intended to raise funds for the benefit of High Hopes Foundation, Inc., chaired by Quezon City councilor Wilma Amoranto-Sarino.

Leading the show participants was Eddie Baddeo, whose designs were simply stunning. Some might complain about a sameness to his gowns, but what Eddie presented was a complete statement, with a unity of line that cleverly combined the classic and the avant-garde. The basic gown which he embellished on from one design to the next is a fitted outfit with a silhouette close to the model’s body. In one gown, he attached an exaggerated cowl-neck for a collar that seemed to engulf the gown in a gigantic bloom. Wide cummerbands, reminiscent of the Japanese obi sash, were tied around the waist of gowns, fastened in a variety of ways. Baddeo’s colors, moving from blue to mauve, purple and violet, added class and highlighted his seamless vision.

Jon Salcedo presented beautiful gowns that are elegant in its use of lace, satin, crepe, etc., all decorated with dangling beads. Its color palette of black and white accentuated his creations’ classic lineage. Rollie Graza’s lovely gowns were studies in contrasting textures. His severe bustiers, assembled from a patchwork of geometric shapes, were paired with soft flowing skirts in frosted organza. On the other hand, Francis Calaquian’s chic creations looked back to the Sixties. Tops with dolman sleeves were paired with bouffant micromini skirts for a youthful ensemble. The delicate beadwork on the skirts, the bugle bead fringes as accent, and the gold on white color scheme made the outfits really fun and frisky.

Veteran designer Rudy Fuentes presented a line of beautiful gowns that worked with printed and plain fabrics to much effect. The strap gowns, some with bouffant skirts, employed a variety of detailing on the bodice. Tops were crushed, pleated, ruched and so on, sometimes using animal print fabrics to a positive effect. Patterns were often embellished with rhinestones for a more brilliant decor.

The other participating designers were Edwin Uy, Lloyd Arceo, Frederick Alba, Eric Pineda, Rex D. And Toby Albrando.

“Año ... Anyo ... 2002” was presented in cooperation with the Susano Group of Companies, Audio Compulsion and Glizaz.

From the mid-60s to the late 1970s, the Hyatt Regency and the Manila Hilton were the in places to be when it came to lunchtime fashion shows. The Hyatt shows were managed by Consuelo “Chito” Madrigal Collantes, Grand Dame of Philippine society and one of the richest women in the country, under the aegis of Bighani International; the Hilton shows were directed by Conching Sunico, under Karilagan International. A number of the country’s respected names in fashion, both designers and models, got their breaks from these venues.

The Hyatt fashion mafia will be having their grand reunion on Dec. 12, at Tita Chito’s North Forbes digs. It is expected to be one of the most important gatherings of fashion’s starry names this year. As far as I can remember, some of the important fashion designers who got their start from the Hyatt include Inno Sotto, Auggie Cordero, Rusty Lopez, Steve de Leon, Oskar Peralta, Tony Cajucom, Joe Salazar, Ernest Santiago, yours truly etc. Some of the popular models who worked at the Hyatt shows were Menchu Menchaca, Wanda Louallien, Tonette Salcedo, Vina Cansino, Minnie Cagatao, Carmeli Adan, Jane Umali, etc.
