The Manila chapter of Skål International announced a golf fund-raising tournament on Feb. 8, 2002 to be held at the executive course of Valley Golf & Country Club in Cainta, Rizal.

The tournament has been planned to augment the funds of Skal Manila in hosting the 31st Skål Asian Area Assembly slated on May 24-26 at the Westin Philippine Plaza hotel, according to V. G. Martinez, golf committee chair of the fund-raising component of the 31st Skål assembly.

He said that the assembly in May is about the only international tourism event in the country in 2002 where the government and the private sectors can jointly promote Philippine destinations to Skål members who are also considered as captains of the travel industry in overseas tourist markets.

Martinez, president of the nationwide Dollar Rent-a-Car organization, added that the tourism industry should take advantage of the Skål Asian assembly in Manila.

“The Skål assembly in Manila is an international event where tour wholesalers also attend. We should grab the opportunity to promote our tourist spots especially our outstanding resorts in the provinces,” Martinez pointed out.

The assembly is an annual gathering of leaders of the tourism industry in Asia and attended by worldwide members of Skål International. Annually, Skål members from different regions of the world hold their regional assembly.

Okinawa, Japan last year hosted the 30th Asian assembly where members of Skal Manila mounted a presentation in effort to promote attendance of the Manila event.

Skål is an acronym of four Scandinavian words, Sundhet for health, Karlek for love, Alder for long life and Lycka for happiness. As the professional association in international travel and tourism industry, Skål membership (pronounced like skull) includes owners and top executives from across the spectrum of tourism-related companies.

Travel managers founded the first Club in 1932 in Paris. The idea of an international goodwill and friendship grew and in 1934 the “Association Internationale Des Skål Clubs” was formed under Paris Club president, Florimond Volckaert, who is considered the “Father of Skål”.

First organized in the Philippines 49 years ago, this year (2001), the Skål movement in the country today, under the leadership of the original Manila chapter, has encouraged formation of the movement in other cities in effort to widen membership. Chapters are now found in Makati, Cebu and Davao.

Several organizations have signified their support of the golf fund-raising by way of sponsorships and donations. They include Philippine Tourism Authority, Duty Free Philippines, and Pagcor.

Other supporters are expected to confirm their participation in the golf fund-raising in the coming weeks.

Airbus Industrie of Europe has agreed to be the main supporter of the Skål assembly in May. As such, the golf fundraising tournament has been named as the Skål Airbus Philippine Tourism Cup, Martinez explained.

He said that the tournament is open to all golfers and will be conducted under the Callaway handicapping system. Tournament fee is R1,800 and includes green fee, lunch, and raffles.

Martinez also said that tournament planners have included several contests within the tournament such as longest drive, most accurate drive, five awards for closest to the hole.

A one-million-peso hole-in-one contest is under negotiation with some sponsors. Raffles comprising of airline tickets to the Asia region, the US and European destinations will abound since airlines and hotels, both local and overseas, support the event.

Hole sponsors ranging from R5,000 to R10,000 are now being offered to interested travel agencies that want to support the international tourism industry event of 2002. Call SKAL Manila, 523-4063, to join as golfer or hole sponsor.
