BEIJING (AFP) — China plans to build a 36-kilometer bridge that it claims will be the world’s second longest cross-sea bridge, state media reported recently.

The bridge will be built at Hangzhou Bay in eastern Zhejiang province, the Xinhua news agency said.

It will boost the region’s economy as it will shorten by 130 kilometers the distance between Shanghai and the port city of Ningbo, it said.

The projected cost of the new bridge was $1.2 billion up from the previously reported $780 million.

Financing will be via bank loans and bond issuances with a small amount of money being provided by the central government, Xinhua said.
