The Philippines has won the Overall Best Marketing Travel award in the Internationale Tourismus Borse (ITB), the biggest travel trade event held annually in Berlin, Germany.

Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon said the Philippines bested entries from the Asia-Pacific region to win the award presented by the Pacific-Asia Tourism Association (PATA), the largest travel organization in the region.

"We made a very good impression on the participants and visitors to the Berlin fair. I am confident this goodwill will translate to increased tourist arrivals next year not only from Europe but from other parts of the world," he said.

Gordon said the Philippine delegation impressed travel leaders and media with its varied and innovative marketing activities that included:

- Full-color posters pasted on Berlin buses throughout the fair.

- Media placement in the ITB Journal, the trade fair's organ.

- TV placements on Cable News Network (CNN) and British Broadcasting Company (BBC).

- The highly successful Philippine Reception Night which featured cultural performances by Filipino entertainers led by Gary Valenciano.

- The press conference where Gordon led a media briefing on the country's tourist attractions.

Last year, the Philippines won the Best Booth award in the same travel fair.

At the media briefing last March 16, Gordon belied impressions by foreigners that the Philippines was an unsafe tourist destination.

He said that the security concerns were limited to a few areas in Basilan and Western Mindanao. He appealed to foreign governments to lift their travel advisories on the Philippines.

ITB ran from March 16 to 20. It was attended by 120,000 visitors from all over the world.

Some 60,000 attendees were travel agents, tour operators, convention organizers, wholesalers and retailers.

The Philippines' biggest tourism markets in Europe are the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands.

From Germany, Gordon will proceed to Amsterdam to brief Dutch travel industry leaders and the media on the country's tourism program.

The Philippines is hosting this year's PATA conference on Sept. 20-22 in Manila.

Gordon was elected PATA chairman for 2003-2004 in recognition of his efforts to promote Philippine and Asia-Pacific tourism and his leadership skills in rallying the travel industry to greater heights.
