DAVAO CITY Kadayawan Fest: A Celebration of life

Davao, the Queen City of the South, braces itself for the arrival of local and foreign tourists, media and photographers as its famous “Kadayawan Festival” unfolds from Aug. 22-25.

The spectacle embodies Davao’s celebration of its rich cultural heritage, bountiful harvests and natural beauty. Davaoeńos will go street dancing (Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan), as well as participate in floral float parade, river festival, trade fairs, exhibits and contests. A tribute to tribal elders will showcase Davao’s indigenous culture while theatrical performances of indigenous epics, folklores and traditions will center on Mindanao’s art and cultural influences.

“Kadayawan” is an expression of Dabawnon origin which refers to anything excellent that brings fortune. Now on its 17th year, it used to be known as the “Apo Duwaling” Festival and was named after Mt. Apo, the country’s highest mountain, Durian, known as the King of Fruits and Waling-Waling, regarded as the Queen of Philippine Orchids. In 1988, the city government adopted a new name, a term that was closer to the essence of Davao culture and reflect the ethnic significance of “Apo Duwaling” – “Kadayawan”.

Touted as the Mardi Gras, Davao-style, the Department of Tourism (DoT) notes the big volume of tourists who flock to Davao at this time of the year, many taking advantage of the WOW Philippines discounted packages.

Davao is also home to beautiful beaches and of course, the Philippine Eagle Conservation Project.
