CORON ISLAND, Palawan (PNA) – The Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) is continuously upgrading the Busuanga Airport to meet increasing demand.

The Airport is one of the gateways to the different destinations in Palawan. SeAir flies to Busuanga Airport daily from Monday to Sunday. The firm is majority owned by Filipinos and American managers.

Currently, the construction of the administration building of the Air Transportation Office (ATO) is on-going while the concreting of the existing runway will follow soon. The ATO building was bidded out January last year.

Rudy Sanico, project director of the 3rd airport projects has disclosed that the Puerto Princesa Airport here in Palawan is also being upgraded to meet international standards.

Other airports under the 3rd airport projects which are under rehabilitation include the Laoag International Airport, Cotabato Airport, Butuan Airport, Dipolog Airport, Pagadian Airport and Sanga-Sanga Airport.

“These airports are to be developed with financial assistance from bilateral and multilateral sources,” Sanico said.

Two years ago, the DoTC invested R3.48 billion for the construction of a new airport in Silay City and the upgrading of the airport in Tacloban City in the Visayas in the light of the increasing traffic demand to these areas.

The bidding for the Japan-funded project is scheduled soon as construction could follow immediately.

Upon the completion of the new airport in Silay City, the old airport in Bacolod City would be closed. The construction of the new airport will be under the OECF.

The undertaking involves the acquisition of 180 hectares of land, the construction of airside facilities such as runways and landslide facilities, the construction of a control tower, crashfire rescue building and administrative building, and the provision of air navigational equipment and facilities.

The OECF will also fund the procurement of airport maintenance and security equipment, the fire vehicles for the Tacloban and Bacolod Airports, and resurfacing of the Tacloban Airport runway.

There were also moves initiated last year for the development of other airports under the Nationwide Air Navigation Facilities modernization Project-Phase III.

DoTC is also upgrading and modernizing the air traffic control and air navigation facilities of 25 selected airport and sites.
