The Department of Tourism (DoT) aimed to get three million foreign tourists for the "Visit Philippines 2003" (VP 2003) and to generate revenues of at least $4.2 billion.

Last year, the Philippines was still able to lure 1.88 million visitors despite the negative image of the country.

With this target arrivals, the DoT eyes more jobs and livelihood opportunities for the Filipino workers in the tourism and travel industry during the VP2003.

The government has tapped the participation of several entities such as tourism organizations, tourism council, tour operators, wholesalers, travel agents, transport companies, etc. for the many tourism activities for the VP2003.

Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon said, "Tourism is the world's No. one industry because of the many socio-economic benefits that it generates for both the private and public sectors of a tourist destination. Tourism means jobs, friendships and economic growth for our people."

Gordon is optimistic that the VP2003 in the Philippines will bring in more cash flows to the country especially in key provinces and cities.

The hotel and restaurant industry are among those that are expected to benefit from the boom in tourist arrivals next year. Even the resorts in the provinces are expected to have full bookings especially during the peak seasons of the VP2003 celebration where local and foreign tourists can experience the grand celebration of Philippine fiestas and many more.

Likewise, shopping malls, showcasing world-class products will benefit from the shopping tour packages.

"A tourist spends an average of $106 (P5,300) a day on shopping, food and entertainment. Since they usually stay an average of eight days, these tourists spent an estimated $848 or P42,000 each," Gordon said.

Demand for tourist transports will also grow with the increase of tourists arrivals next year.

Local tourism councils in the regions are also heading for busier days with the preparation of special tour packages for visitors coming to the country.

The celebration of festivals in the provinces and cities would also boost the demand for cultural performers. Demands for artists to decorate the streets and stages, chefs to prepare the best gourmet foods for tourists and guests in hotels and restaurants will also grow.

To assure the safety and security of tourists coming to the country, the government is also considering the hiring of police personnel to ensure the safety and security of visitors.

The opening of the NAIA Terminal III, hopefully, on May, in time for the VP2003, would also generate more jobs for Filipinos, Gordon said, adding, "the realization that tourism growth means more jobs will make every Filipino protective of tourists." (PNA)
