SYDNEY (Reuters) —Australia launched the world’s first automated passport checks using facial-recognition technology, recently, as it continued to tighten security at its borders in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
At a cost of US$708,000, the new SmartGate kiosk scans passport photos and compares them with the faces of travellers — replacing manual checks by customs officers at Sydney airport.
The first phase of the project will apply only to crew members of national flag carrier Qantas Airways Ltd. It is likely to be expanded to staff of other international airlines, and other Australian airports, b
2004.
“Members of the public can then choose to use the 10-second photomatching entry system or take their place in a queue to have their passports manually processed,” said Minister for Justice and Customs, Chris Ellison.
Other countries are experimenting with iris recognition technology or palm print systems.
Because of privacy concerns, the Australian version of SmartGate will only
check a passport image with a person’s face and will not be able to compare those images with photographs in other databases.
