Big travel agents in Japan is optimistic that Japanese tourists coming to the Philippines will be increased in the future.

This was disclosed by Eijvu Abe, president of Kamone Corporation, one of the largest travel agencies in Japan, saying “We are planning to increase the tour program. We are targeting the women because we want them to experience the shopping, walk-through of the places in the Philippines.’’

Abe said the company has been operating for 20 years as travel agents and “we have been sending at least 3,000 to 5,000 Japanese tourists in the Philippines every month to Cebu, Boracay, or Palawan for sightseeing and because these places are famous for beach resorts.’’

Abe together with several top officials of travel agencies in Japan recently visited Intramuros and celebrated the Japan night as part of the Visit Philippines 2003 (VP2003).

During the night, Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon, Philippine Ambassador to Japan Domingo Siazon and Abe led the Sake Breaking Ceremony (Kagamiwari) and then proposed a “Kampai” with the guests.

Besides Abe, the group of travel agents include Yukitomo Ishimatsu, president, Overseas Tourists Co.; Shinsaki Kasuya, president, Seibu Travel Inc.; Kenji Ema, representative director, Nikko Travel; Yoshizumi Hasegawa, manager, Turtle Travel Co., Ltd.; Genaro Velasquez, Country manager, PAL; Benito Bengzon, Jr. of DoT-Japan; Tsugushi Suszuki, sales manager, Friendship International Co.; and Ken Kawaguchi, president, Prudence Tour.

Other guests include DoT Undersecretary Oscar P. Palabyab; Assistant Secretary Ma. Theresa Martinez; Arcie Soriano; Bong Cruz of PAL, and others.

Japan remains to be the Philippines’ second largest tourist generator. Bringing the Japanese inside the walls is an assurance to the success of VP2003 campaign.

“In 1903, the Japanese built the Kennon Road in Baguio. They are now welcome here because they are building the connection to the highland and lowland,” Gordon said.

One of the highlights of the night which was held at the PC Barracks in Intramuros was the performance of the 30-member dulaan group of an excerpts of “Kanjin-cho”, a very popular kabuki play with Japanese buyo master Fujima Toyohiro in charge of production.

The guests were also treated to a night of classical Japanese performance by Tenor Jonathan Badon and Soprano Alegria Ferrer.
