Now, on its 11th year, the Department of Tourism’s annual awards ceremony, KALAKBAY Awards, will present two awards to the Aboitiz Transport Group on Dec. 5, 6 p.m. at the Reception Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center. The said KALAKBAY awards are: Secretary’s Award for WG&A SuperFerry and the KALAKBAY Award for Inter-Island Shipping Line of the Year for SuperCat in due recognition to individuals and entities in the tourism industry whose creativity, expertise, professionalism and service have been of the highest standards. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is guest of honor.

Initiated in 1989, the KALAKBAY Award aims to develop tourism consciousness in the country by seeking to recognize local and international corporate entities and individuals in the industry who have excelled in management performance and tourism service-those who have contributed immeasurably to the growth of the industry to the prestige of the institutions they represent.

“WG&A SuperFerry is being awarded for its contributions to our tourism industry, particularly its active involvement in the Department of Tourism’s Visit Philippines 2003 and WOW Philippines campaigns and its unwavering support in other marketing programs of the department,” DOT Secretary Richard Gordon confirmed.

“We are very happy and honored to be receiving the KALAKBAY awards, which recognizes SuperFerry’s commitment of bridging islands, cultures and people together. This poses as a challenge, and the same time, an opportunity for us to continue championing the Filipino culture through tourism-related advocacy projects in order to become the best passenger RORO company in the world by 2005,” said Gina Virtusio, WG&A SuperFerry PR and corporate communications manager.

Virtusio said, the Aboitiz Transport Group goes out of its way to provide the highest standards in service, safety and convenience in order to impart customer delight.

Cebu-based SuperCat Fast Ferry Corporation’s VP for Operations Edgardo Nicolas, on the other hand, believes that “winning the prestigious and most-coveted KALAKBAY award signifies there is more to operating ships. When it comes to responsibility, creativity, integrity and uprightness in culture – something that most ship-owners (in Cebu) still have to imbibe.”

“We have always believed in exceeding and outperforming even our own benchmarks,” Nicolas added.

Incidentally, the Aboitiz E-Services Team won the People’s Choice Award for wgasuperferry.com/travel, in the e-travel category and the Best Website Award for supercat.com.ph at the recent 6th Philippine Web Awards held at Onstage, in Greenbelt, Makati City. The wgasuperferry.com/travel link has an online ticketing facility that allows customers from all over the world to reserve and to pay for SuperFerry tickets online. The supercat.com.ph URL, on the other hand, features tourist hotspots, Island Skip Trips tour packages, promos, ticket reservations, schedules and other information that serve as an online manual for the perfect holiday getaway using the SuperCat. Other WG&A sites, such as www.abotizone.com.ph and www.wgasuperferry.com were also finalists in the corporate category. The Philippine Web Awards is an award-giving body that honors best Filipino created websites and the teams behind them.

WG&A SuperFerry and SuperCat are both under the Aboitiz Transport Group, the largest transport group in the Philippines today.
