Vigan City Tourism Council recently held a “Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts” coinciding with its town fiesta last May 1 and 2.
To promote the native cloth industry of the province called "Abel Iloko", Vigan took off with "Vigan House Abel Deco Contest" where participants were all required to use Abel Iloko in decorating their houses and other business establishments.
The contest created a festive atmosphere all around the town of historic Vigan particularly in major streets like Plaza Burgos, Quezon Avenue, Liberation Boulevard, Crisologo and Florentino Streets. The contest was won by one of the newest hotels in Vigan – the Vigan Heritage Mansion owned by Julie Singson-Manahan, daughter of Ilocos Sur former Governor Pedro Singson. The historic 118-year-old hotel was restored to its original architecture but with modern Mediterranean interior and facilities and is now the favorite hotel of local and foreign tourists.
Vigan also held "Viva Vigan Binatbatan Street Dancing Contest" last May 1 in Plaza Burgos. Costumes and props were all innovative and artistic. Dancers incorporated also the use of abel cloth and sticks.
Another must-see is the "Calesa Parade and Contest" which was participated by private individuals, calesa owners or calesas sponsored by business establishments, organizations or government agencies. Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts required participants to decorate their calesas using materials indigenous to the City such as: Abel Iloko (the native handwoven cloth); Burnay (Vigan jars); damili; agricultural products; and processed foods like longaniza, bagnet and kankanen.
Vigan is truly a place to see. Aside from seeing Heritage Village which was declared by UNESCO as one of the World’s Heritage sites, the food, the people, the churches, the many souvenirs you can buy, the rich history the city can boast of… Vigan is truly one memorable place to go.
