Intramuros shows feature Youth Day concert & Lanao del Norte festival

In celebration of the 5th International Youth Day, a free concert will be held today, Aug. 13 at the Clamshell 1, Intramuros, Manila. Sponsored by the Asian Social Institute and the Department of Tourism, in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and Viva Records, Inc., “Rock the Walls” will feature various bands of different type of music such as ethnic sounds, acoustics and disco rock music.





Toppingthe list of performers is Cynthia Alexander, a singer-songwriter, arranger, producer and multi-instrumentalist who represented the Philippines at the 3rd Rainforest World Music Festival in Sarawak, Borneo, in August 2000.



She bagged various awards such as best world music composition in the 8th Katha Music Awards, record and song of the year, best alternative music vocal performance, best alternative music album and music composition and best engineered recording for the “Intertwyne,” album of the year and best album design for Rippingyarns and producer of the year in the 7th Katha Music Awards.



Joining Alexander are Philippine Normal University Kislap Sining Dance Troupe, Stonefree, Mongols, Fuseboxx, Silent Saturday, Tanglaw Sining, Lana J. with the Stringskin and Crabnebula.



Meanwhile, Saturday’s show will feature the province of Lanao del Norte as it hosts a “Pagana Maranaw” food festival of its famous delicacies along with songs and dances including the popular Sagayan Dance. The event which will be held during the Best of Region 10 show at theClamshell 1 in Intramuros, is a showcase of Lanao del Norte’s culture, arts, tradition and lifestyle of its people.

The public can partake of a unique Maranaw delicacy like the “bagoongamahong” (from the shell called amahong), sweet milled-rice padded with durian fruit, and many more. They will also be treated to live demonstration of malong weaving during the event.



Known for its famous malong cloth, Lanao del Norte is exporting the product to other countries.

Several of its 22 municipalities will also present popular year-round festivals through streetdancing and other musical presentations. The festivals are: Hudyaka sa Lubi festival of Linamon town, Jan. 23; Hugyaw sa Kadagatan—Kauswagan, April 17; Hudyaka sa Kinhason Festival, Jan. 20 in Bacolod; Anihan Festival of Maigo every last week of February; Sarimanok Festival of Kolambugan, July 3; Sagingan Festival of Tubod, Oct. 17-30; Giniakan Festival, a tribute to pottery making in Batoy; Alimango Festival of Lala on March 23; and the newly-created Tulingan festival in Sultan Naga Dimaporo.



An added attraction is the musical presentation of the Iligan Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) depicting the Maranaw culture.
