KALIBO, Aklan — The famous Kalibo Ati-atihan, which will be celebrated this coming January, will cap the activities of the grand reunion of the alumni of the Northwestern Visayan Colleges, a leading educational institution here in the island of Panay.

Held in honor of Sto. Niño, Ati-atihan is so called because Kalibo natives, domestic and foreign tourists masquerading as Negritos imitate aboriginal dances on streets around the town plaza in a many house affair, the biggest, noisiest and rowdiest in the country. A church ritual ends the festival.

NVC alumni now practicing their professions in various parts of the country and abroad are expected to arrive here in Kalibo on the second week of January, just before the Kalibo Ati-atihan, considered to most unique of all festivals in the country.

The NVC alumni – consisting of graduates from high school, bachelor degrees, to post graduate studies – have recently formed a foundation that would undertake projects dedicated to their alma mater as well as promote their welfare.

The NVC Alumni Foundation has a new set of officers, namely: Former UNESCO commissioner Juan P. Dayang, currently the publisher of The Leader magazine and president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI); Supt. Nemesio P. Neron, former provincial director of the Philippine National Police in Aklan and Judge Lollie Ureta Villaruel, have been elected chairman, president and vice president, respectively.

Other elected officers and directors are Ms. Eralen B. De Aro, vice president for external affairs; Ms. Elma M. Jera, secretary; Ms. Leonora Lao, treasurer; Ms. Elenita T. Gabor, asst. treasurer-secretary; Jesse S. Quimpo, auditor; Capt. Georby C. Manuel, business manager; and Engr. Roger M. Esto, public relations officer; Kalibo councilor Lilian Q. Tirol, Rufino C. Leyson, Victor J. Nabiong, and Selmar S. Maribojo, directors.

Former Aklan Congressman Allen Salas Quimpo, NVC president, and Aklan Board Member Plaridel Morania, are consultant and adviser, respectively.

Alumni residing in Manila and other areas of the country and abroad may contact Johnny Dayang at tel. Nos. 8929278/894-4687 cellphone No. (0920) 9094379 e-mail:papi@gawab.com.
