SAN FERNANDO CITY – The 2nd “Annual Piestang Tugak” reels off on Oct. 7 in celebration of the multi-faceted significance of the frog in the daily lives of “Kapampangans.”

The two-day festival, which started last year, aims to perpetuate the beautiful traditions that had emerged through centuries of catching and cooking ricefield frogs that were once in abundance in Pampanga.

Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez said that the frog has been a part of Kapampangan tradition and culinary culture dating from pre-Hispanic times.

“That was when wet rice were still totally dependent on rainwater to irrigate their farms while their children gamely caught frogs as their elders busied themselvesharnessing the paddies or planted rice,” he qualified.

Rodriguez also stressed that frogs contribute to the economic well-being of this emerging urban center through the income generated by restaurants serving the exotic delicacy known as stuffed frogs or “betute.”

“One important characteristic of frogs is that they eat insects with the use of their long and sticky tongues; hence, they help in maintaining environmental rhythm because they aid ecological and health workers when consuming killer flies,” Rodriguez pointed out.

Rodriguez also averred that the frog is one of the more resilient divine creatures as it is versatile enough to live on land, water and eat even trees and rocks.

“That is precisely the reason why it was chosen as the focal symbol of the festivities marking the first 100 days in office of my humble city administration,” he added.

In this connection, Public Affairs and Media Production Unit (PAMPU) Chief Patrick Canlas disclosed that the highlights of the affair include a motorcade, exhibit, frog fishing, frog Olympics, frog cooking competition, cultural show and food festival.
