Singapore Airlines (SIA) has recently started its thrice weekly B777 services to Amritsar giving passengers travelling to India the convenience of a direct service to the Indian state of Punjab.
With the new service, SIA will be serving seven Indian destinations including New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Almedabad and Bangalore. This will bring to 38 the total number of non-stop weekly services that SIA operates to India. SilkAir, the regional wing of SIA operates 11 weekly services to Hyderabad, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
Amritsar, located in northwestern Punjab, has been the capital of the Sikh religion since the 16th century and the Golden Temple is the most outstanding attraction in the city. Other tourist attractions include the Ram Bagh, a beautiful garden named after the city’s founding father and the summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, which has a museum showcasing weapons dating back to the Mughal rule.
The city, surrounded by a fertile region, is well known for its agricultural produce, textiles and has a thriving chemical industry. An important transport center, Amritsar is well-linked to the rest of India by air, road and rail, and is the gateway to neighboring states like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
“Amritsar is SIA’s seventh destination in India. The greater accessibility to Amritsar will enhance the city’s position as the gateway to the surrounding states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Rajastan. More importantly, it will facilitate the growth and development of business and tourism in Punjab,” said Tan Chik Quee, SIA’s senior vice president, West Asia and Africa.
