While the DoT will begin the task of promoting these destinations, other departments will complement the effort by providing necessary infrastructures to make the tourist sites more accessible and pleasantly convenient.

Durano said the construction of several infrastructure projects to help backstop the country’s ambitious tourism expansion program are now underway. These projects include the North Rail that will link Metro Manila to the Clark Special Economic Zone in the north, the development of different airports such as the San Fernando Airport, Panglao, Palawan, Iloilo and Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) in Clark, among others.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has invested R2 billion for the expansion of the DMIA AT Clark into a world-class passenger and cargo terminal. The expansionwill start shortly and will include passenger terminal tubes, air bridge and ramp.

The Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) has also earmarked R8 million for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the San Fernando Airport in La Union to lure more investments in the Poro Point Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ) and create more jobs and boost the economy of Northern Luzon.

The rehabilitation includes the sealing of the runway pavement, repair of its fire truck, procurement of the air navigation equipment and weather instruments, among others. It will be completed by December.

Also in the pipeline is the conversion of the San Fernando Airport into an international airport to form part of the 231hectare PPSEZ complex that also includes the La Union Seaport.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) said it will likewise pursue the construction of the R2.614 billion Panglao Airport in Bohol. The project is proposed to be funded under the 25th yen credit package for the Japan Bank for International cooperation (JBIC).

The DoTC will also fast-track the upgrading of the Puerto Princesa Airport to meet international standards and increasing demand.

The R4.9-billion Davao International Airport (DIA) will serve as the base for the development of Mindanao. The facility has a world-class domestic and international passenger terminal that has been designed to reflect the cultural heritage of Davao.

The airport can operate 24 hours a day with its three-kilometer runway and lighting system to serve big aircraft for international flights.” (PNA)
