CARAGA in a nutshell

The Clamshell I in Intramuros transforms into a virtual ecotourism destination with sand, surf, waterfalls and more as the CARAGA Administrative Region in northeast Mindanao takes centerstage in the latest “Best of the Regions” show of the Department of Tourism. From Nov. 6-22, the public will have the chance to see the best attractions, products and rich culture of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur, and the bustling cities of Butuan and Surigao.

The region got its name CARAGA from Republic Act No. 7901 which was signed into law by President Fidel V. Ramos on Feb. 23, 1995. CARAGA comes from the word Calagan which means "Land of the Brave" or "fierce people."

Special guests during the grand opening day on Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. include Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, Undersecretary Evelyn B. Pantig, Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers of Surigao del Norte and other local officials.

The region with the country’s largest gold and mineral deposits also features its other gems — its people, farm, seas and inland waters, considered more precious than its mineral deposits.

Highlights of the 17-day show are the recreated versions of Siargao, the Surfing Capital of the country which comes with a replica of its world-famous giant waves — the Cloud Nine; the four-tiered Tinuyan Falls of Bislig City, Surigao del Sur; and Lake Mainit, the Philippines’ third largest that runs in the province of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur. The lake was recently feted as the cleanest body of water in the country.

Another expected crowd-drawer is the replica of the Cantiasay-San Pedro wooden footbridge in Nonoc Island. The country’s longest at 391 meters, the footbridge was originally conceived to ease movement and communication between two barangays. Today, it has become a resting and promenade area.

Must-see cultural shows include the Bonok-Bonok Festival, a thanksgiving ritual for a bountiful harvest; and the Karawasan "Crab" dance.

Also available for sale are local products such as wooden crafts, accessories, textile, food and furniture made from the region.
