Escape Beat, a compilation of writings churned out for various publications by Dr. Saturnino P. Javier, a cardiologist-writer, will be launched on Nov. 23, 7 p.m. at the Quezon Ballroom of the Makati Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City.

Leading the invited guests are luminaries in the cardiovascular community.

The columns were mostly published in the Philippine Heart Associations (PHA) Newsbriefs, the newsletter of this 1,000 strong organization of Filipino cardiologists, considered the premier cardiovascular society in the Philippines. The rest were written for Last Call (Health & Lifestyle magazine), Men Over Forty (Manila Times) and Quill’s Squeal (The Varsitarian), the official student organ of the University of Santo Tomas, where he held post as editor in chief from 1980-81.

He describes his book as a "physician’s journalistic breather through escapist musings which are partly diary-keeping, story-telling, or just kibitzing on one hand, and editorializing, consensus building and issue-tracking on another."

A US-trained interventional cardiologist who performs cardiac catherization, coronary angiography and angioplasty at two major tertiary centers namely Makati Medical Center and Asian Hospital and Medical Center, Javier considers writing as his second passion, which is as therapeutic as a cup of brewed black coffee, his favorite "elixir" that induces productivity.

The author of Escape Beat has been at the helm of the PHA Newsbriefs since 2003, but has been its regular contributor since 1999.
