Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano yesterday allayed fears of residents and tourists in Baguio brought about by sensationalized reporting of some cases of Meningococcemia in the city.

Durano made the announcement in response to the Department of Health’s (DoH) report that there is no cause for alarm over the bacterial disease in the country’s summer capital. He expressed hope that visitors will not let the hyped information about the disease affect the city’s tourism industry and its reputation as one of the top destinations in the country.

Many tourists are expected to troop to the city for the Baguio Tossed Salad Festival, one of the much-awaited festivals in the city, starting today, Nov. 26.

The three-day festival will showcase various activities that aim to promote Benguet’s vegetables and rootcrops. Among these are rootcrop sculpting, culinary and bartending tilts, housekeeping skills, wall climbing competitions, barangay potato salad-making contest and a suppliers’ expo and demonstration of products and services.

The highlight of the festival is the "Race to the Salad Bowl" event. Patterned after the TV reality show "Amazing Race," the contest requires two teams to race around the city to collect salad ingredients and deliver it to the Baguio Convention Center where the tossed salad will be served to the public.

The Baguio Salad Festival was conceived in 2001 to sustain tourism in the city during the lean season and help vegetable growers in Benguet to market their produce. It was created by DoT Regional Director Purificacion Molintas, and Baguio Association of Hotels and Inns president Jeannie Chan and vice president Gerry Beltran.
