The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) government’s financial assistance through the Private Enterprise Accelerated Resource Linkages (Pearl) 2 projects has extended for Cebu tourism development.

Restie Mali, program officer of the partnership development facility (PDF) component Pearl 2, said CIDA is willing to allocate another R6 million to R8 million to help the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) in its projects to improve Cebu’s tourism industry.

"The amount could go higher. The focus this time of Pearl 2’s assistance is tourism," he said during the recent 3rd Regional Trade and Technology Fair (RTTF) 2004 at SM City Cebu trade hall.

The RTTF organized by the CCCI, is one of the projects under the Business and Industry Growth (BIG) promotions of CCCI.

BIG is funded by Pearl 2, with the International agency donating some R1 million.

The three-day RTTF brought together products of small and medium enterprises (SME) in the region such as fashion accessories, wearables, home furnishing, furniture, organics and natural products, fresh and processed food, holiday decor, gift items and other related raw and semi processed materials or products.

Mali said the chamber is now preparing the proposal for its next partnership with Pearl 2. CCCI president Robert Go said one of the activities included in the chamber’s proposal is its tourism promotions to China to attract the Chinese to come to the country.

CIDA, through Pearl 2, hopes to contribute to the reduction of poverty in the Philippines through equitable and sustainable development by forming SMEs that create meaningful jobs for both men and women.
