With tourist arrivalsin the upswing and its tourism infrastructure in place, Cebu is expected to provide the muchneeded boost to the country’s tourism and the national economy as a whole.
National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Deputy Director Augusto B. Santos made this assessment during the recent national Meeting of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) in Lahug, Cebu.
Expressing optimism over Cebu’s potentials as one of the country’s major tourist destinations, Santos said a more concerted effort to maintain and improve the province’s tourism potentials would go a long way in attracting visitors to the southern city.
"While we are doing our best to inform the public about the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan, we would also like to ask you to spread the good news," Santos urged the local officials.
"This is our development plan," he added, referring to the MTPDP, which also spells out the government’s tourism strategies.
"These are the things that we have to do during the next six years. Let us work together to achieve these goals," he added.
The 2004-2010 MTPDP identifies priority action plans on tourism designed to attract more tourists to visit the country. Under the MTPDP, five million tourists are projected to visit the Philippines during the Plan period leading to the employment of around three to six million Filipinos before 2010.
"Tourism development is a key element in the government’s job generation strategy. If properly promoted with a liberal airline policy, it can generate at least three million jobs," Santos said.
Cited as a major tourist destination, Cebu will be given priority in terms of major infrastructure improvement as part of the government’s program to promote the city as a major tourist attraction.
