Mandarin Oriental, Manila kicks off the New Year with Swedish cuisine and music in a week-long activity aptly billed "Distinctly Swedish" – a stimulating display of delightful and gustatory Swedish fare and jazz music by the Sliding Hammers Jazz Group, on Jan. 10 to 15 at the Captain’s Bar.

Presented by the Embassy of Sweden, in association with Mandarin Oriental, Manila, Scandinavian Airlines System, and Ericsson Microware System – the culinary event will be offering lunch and dinner buffets from Monday to Wednesday, and lunch buffet only on Thursday and Friday at R730++, and will showcase Sweden’s fine old culinary tradition which consists of good old everyday food based on classic country cooking.

Some of the region’s lavish and hearty homegrown specialties to be prepared by Swedish guest chef Andreas Balla will include: Graved Lax with dill-mustard sauce; Swedish meatballs with cranberry sauce; Veal stew with dill; "Wallenbergsare" veal frikadelle; Nordic profiteroles with creme Bavaroise, "Biffa la Lindstrom" beef frikadelle; Nordic profiteroles with creme Bavaroise; "Biff a la Lindtsrom" beef frikadelle with beetroot and capers; Poached cod in egg-parsley sauce; Swedish pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream; Swedish apple pie with vanilla sauce, among others.

To complement the distinctly Swedish gastronomic adventure, is the soothing mainstream jazz music of the Sliding Hammers Jazz Group, during lunch on Monday, and dinner on Monday, Tuesday, Friday. The group is a lively Swedish band led by two excellent sister trombonists Karinand Mimmi Hammar, pianist Mathias Algotsson, bassist Tommy Johnsson, and drummer Ronnie Gardiner, with outstanding guest guitarist Andreas Petterson. The two sisters known to be the undisputed queens of mainstream jazz and one of the best international finds in the recently concluded Rochester International Jazz Festival, are very well received and a regular fixture in numerous jazz festivals today.

Guest guitarist Andreas Petterson, a big name in Swedish jazz and one of the most outstanding guitarists Sweden has ever produced, is credited for his amazing technical guitar-playing that combines burning energy with romantic self-reflection, and his sense of phrasing that closely resembles horn-players. His influences include the likes of Joe Pass, Jimmy Raney, and Kenny Burell. Pettersson has also toured and recorded with many of the great names in modern jazz such as, Toots Thielemans, Horace Parlan, Junior Mance, Joe Sample, and Ed Thigpen, to name a few.
