Setting luxury hotel trend

BANGKOK, Thailand — If familiar smells, sounds and food create a welcoming atmosphere, Four Seasons just became a little bit more the ‘home away from home’ for the globetrotting business traveler.

Four Seasons Hotel, Bangkok recently completed the first phase of a US$7 million refurbishment project with the introduction of seven Deluxe Corner Suites.

Open since 1983, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok provides a preferred address for both business and leisure travelers, and the highly personalized, anticipatory service that Four Seasons guests expect and value around the world.

Recent awards and honors include 2004 Conde Nast Traveler Gold List, Top 5 in Asia and #2 in Thailand and 2003 Travel & Leisure, World’s Best Service, Top 10 Hotels worldwide.

Designed by Jeffrey Wilkes of LTW Designworks, Kuala Lumpur, the newly renovated one-bedroom designer suites were transformed into luxurious environments that reflect the design philosophies of this landmark hotel in its urban resort setting. At the same time the latest technical accessories accommodate the needs of the modern-day traveler.

The overall direction is clean and contemporary with a nod towards the Thai heritage. Thai silks and cottons plus chenille fabrics with interwoven silk create a rich and sumptuous environment without compromising comfort. The two color schemes are Thai powder red against a golden sand base and Celadon green to offset the dark teak furniture and paneling. Carpets are custom-made of hand knotted wool with a mix of loop and velvet pile.

The former dining and study area was reconfigured to expand the workspace while retaining a casual dining environment with a full bar section. With the city’s best restaurants under one roof, a full-scale dining area was deemed superfluous.

The décor is also accented by individual pieces of Thai artifacts showcased in a sculpture niche separating the living room from the study/dining area.

The new central electronic lighting and A/C panel provides a single control point for the entire suite. A 42-inch Plasma Screen TV and DVD/CD entertainment center plus high-speed Internet access — considered de rigueur for today’s business traveler — are discreetly incorporated into the design.

The bedroom also reveals a clean, contemporary look that recreates the atmosphere of a private home. The vanity table was moved to the bedroom to take advantage of the natural daylight. The headboard relief motive is reminiscent of Thai temple architecture establishing a distinct sense of location for the visitor. The lamp design is sleek with simple timber and metal shades in pearl colored silk. All fabrics were manufactured in Thailand.

Four Seasons also introduced a first in the luxury hotel trend: The availability of 20 Gigabyte iPODs in all Deluxe suites, preloaded with over 1000 songs to cover the spectrum of popular, contemporary and classical music. In addition, special song requests will be accommodated with advance notice.

"Today’s business traveler wants choice and variety" says Director of Rooms, Peter Clarke. ‘Instead of a limited selection of CDs guests can now choose from a selection of over 100 CDs preloaded to an iPod for the perfect music to suit their mood and if we don’t have their favorite tunes, we will download it before their scheduled visit."

The iPods are also available in the Hotel’s Health Club pre-loaded with upbeat and energetic tunes to match a cardio workout. A more soothing and serene version with classical, string or New World music helps relaxation during a massage in one of the spa rooms.
