Magdalena town in Laguna was the site recently of the town’s first Kawayan Festival – a festive, colorful celebration of the native bamboo and its role in the culture and livelihood of this historic town.

Founded in 1820, rustic Magdalena lies at the foot of the legendary Mt. Banahaw. Named one of the cleanest and most beautiful towns in Luzon, its 19,000 inhabitants had turned out recently to promote bamboo-based industries and cultural dances on the occasion of their town’s 185th Foundation Day.

Liga ng mga Barangay national president James Marty Lim was special guest at the festival, and together with Magdalena town officials led by Mayor Nieva Reodica, congratulated the Magdaleños for their initiatives to promote the local bamboo industry.

The Liga ng mga Barangay has enjoined all barangays nationwide to think of income-generating activities for themselves as it aims for self-sufficiency. Magdalena, Laguna responded in a creative and colorful way to this national challenge.
