Who must be extra careful?

Infants and Young Children.
Statistics regarding children and overexposure to the sun paint a very disturbing picture. It is estimated that children are exposed to the sun three times more than adults-and often without sun protection. According to the American Skin Cancer Foundation, 80% of a person's lifetime exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation occures before the ages of 18 to 20.

This is compounded by the fact that a young child has more skin relative to his or her body mass so sthe sunburn will cover more area and will be more serious. Properly protecting your skin during the first 18 years of life can reduce the risk of some types of skin cancer by 78%

Besides skin damage, babies and young children are more susceptible to irreversible solar eye damage.

Older People. Older people may experience thinning skin and hair loss. So they need extra protection from the sun.

People Taking Medications. Some drugs change the chemicals in your skin and make it more sensitive to the sun. People taking certain diuretics, tranquilizers, antibiotics, astringents and lupus patients may develop rashes or other allergic reactions when exposed to sunlight.

Sun Facts

The amount of UV you are exposed to changes with the time of day, seasons, weather conditions and where you happen to be, The more intense the sun, the greater your exposure to UV.

The amount of UV that will filter down to the Earth depends on the following:

Time of Day. UV is greatest when the sun is highest in the sky-generally midday, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. - and less in the early morning and late afternoon. A good rule of thumb is "If your shadow is shorter than you are, you should take extra precautions in the sun."

Season. While UV exposure is greatest in summer, it is important to remember that the UV reaches the Earth every day and you should remember to take the appropriate precautions in the sun all year round.

Altitude. The air is cleaner and thinner at higher altitudes, therefore, UV exposure is greater in the mountains than in the valleys.

Cloud Cover. In general, the thicker and darker the clouds, the less UV will pass through. However, puffy fair weather clouds and thin, light clouds will let most of the UV through. You can get sunburned even when the sun is not shining because up to 80% of the sun's rays penetrate the cloud cover, so be careful!

Where you live. UV si strongest at the equator and gets weaker as you move towards the Earth's poles. Remember to take extra precaution since our country is near the equator.

Type of Surface you are on.  Most surfaces reflect UV radiation to some extent. You get much more UV on sand, water and concrete, since these surfaces aer bright and reflect the sun back onto your skin like a mirror. Dry sand and concrete can reflect up to 12%. You can get sunburned when you are in water. Water reflects an additional 5% of the sun rays back on you. UV reflected back onto your skin just adds to what you are being exposed to simply by being outdoors.

Length of Time spent in the Sun.
The longer you are out in the sun, the more UV you receive. Many of us forget to include time spent outside doing daily activities such as walkign a dog, getting the mail or walking to a train or bus stop as time spent in the sun. However, much of the UV exposure we get is from these types of activities.
