Location. The Ruby Room is a spa property located in the historic Wicker Park district of Chicago, Ill. This lodging is surrounded by eclectic restaurants, shops, art galleries and nightclubs.
Hotel Features. The Ruby Room is housed within two historic brownstone buildings originally constructed in 1896. This urban sanctuary blends elements of fashion, art, beauty services and wellness-therapy programs to create a center for revitalization and education. An outdoor herb garden features exotic Brazilian ipé wood and showcases a koi pond bordered by a labyrinth-designed Turkish stone terrace. The Ruby Room provides a healing sanctuary staffed with massage therapists and an acupuncturist. The spa offers signature treatments such as the Enerssage, the Crystalssage and the Chakrassage. Yoga instruction includes Vinaysa and Hatha styles. Three on-site shops include the Beauty Bar & Boutique, the Chinese Elixir Bar and Boutique, and the Yoga Lounge and Boutique. The hair salon offers products such as Aveda, Bumble & Bumble and Arcona Skincare. Ron TeeGuarden's Dragon Herbs are displayed in the apothecary. A wide selection of books, candles, minerals and jewelry are also available for purchase. Guests have full access to a communal kitchen.
Guestrooms. The Ruby Room offers eight guestrooms designed with red oak and walnut floors, Oriental rugs, custom moldings, wainscoating and antique furnishings. Guestrooms are accessed via stairway, only. Beds consist of pillowtop mattresses draped beneath down comforters and luxurious 500-thread count sheets. Marble-clad bathrooms with glass-enclosed showers are stocked with Aveda toiletries and spa-quality towels. Commercial-level steam showers are provided in four guestrooms. Accommodations are designed to promote feelings of tranquility. As such, they are not equipped with televisions or telephones.
Expert Tip. One evening a week, the Ruby Room offers a "read aloud book group." The open format is intended to encourage feelings of community while sharing individual interpretations of the selected readings.
