Cagayan brings sports/adventure attractions to Intramuros today

Cagayan Valley Region’s sports and adventure attractions will take centerstage today in this month’s edition of the “Philippines’ Best” at the Clamshell Tent 1 in Intramuros, Manila.

Dubbed as the "3rd Pagayaya Festival," which will run until Oct. 23, the event highlights the "Sports Tourism and Adventure Tour Program" (Lakas-Bisig Pinoy) of the Department of Tourism (DoT) in conjunction with its campaign "I Love The Philippines! Biyahe Na!."

According to DoT Region II Director Blessida Diwa, the sports and adventure tourism destinations of the region would be accentuated in all the activities and exhibit showcase like the rock-wall climbing and caving.

"Pagayaya" will bring to Intramuros the products of Cagayan Valley’s five provinces including Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino and its three cities — Cauayan, Santiago and Tuguegarao. Miniature versions of its top attractions such as the Callao Cave, churches and Ivatan houses will be featured. Cultural performances that speak of its rich heritage will also be showcased.

A mass will commence the grand opening today followed by a Parade of Festivals at the Plaza San Ignacio Ruins. Diwa added that among the various fiestas to be featured are "Payuhwan Festival" of Batanes, "Panagdadapun Festival" of Quirino, "Gawagaway-yan Festival" of Cauayan City, and "Pav-vurulun Festival" of Tuguegarao City.

For the business-minded and travel enthusiasts, there will be numerous booths selling souvenir items, toys, house wares, processed and fresh fruits and vegetables inside the Clamshell while furniture sellers from all over the region will have their own stands at the Plaza San Ignacio Ruins.

Meanwhile, native dishes such as Tuguegarao Longganisa; rice cakes like inatata, muriekos, and binallay; and the Pancit Cabagan of Isabela and Pancit Batil Patung of Tuguegarao City will be available at the Bahay Tagala, in front of the Clamshell Tent.

For the devotees of Our Lady of Piat, the pilgrim image will be at Clamshell 1 for the duration of the regional celebration wherein masses will also be held.

The "Pagayaya Food Festival" will also take place at the Sulo Hotel in Quezon City until Oct. 14. The food festival will feature Ibanag, Ilocano and Itawes dishes. Visitors can have a taste of the Cagayan Region’s sumptuous cuisine for only R430.50 for lunch and R325.00 for dinner.

"Pagayaya," which means merrymaking and joyful gathering, promises a one-stop entertainment venue for all visitors.
